Dr. De La Rosa first to use Da Vinci
Dr. Antonio De La Rosa will be the first in El Paso to perform a robotic-assisted hysterectomy, making cutting edge technology available for the surgical treatment of gynecologic conditions. Dr. De La Rosa will perform this operation utilizing the daVinci robotic system.
Hysterectomy is the most common female surgery, with roughly 650,000 performed each year in the U.S. Most are done utilizing an abdominal approach. Hysterectomy is just one example of a number of gynecologic surgeries amendable to a robotic approach. Although other minimally invasive laparoscopic approaches are currently available, a robotic approach allows for completion of more complex operations. The DaVinci system enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with unmatched precision.
Robotic surgery combines the benefits of both open and minimally invasive techniques. The daVinci robot consists of 3-4 robotic arms attached to surgical instruments which are controlled by a surgeon from a remote console. Direct, precise instrument movement through the robotic system provides physicians with increased dexterity, and allows for more precise suturing-allowing surgeons to perform more complex procedures without having to resort to invasive open surgery. Furthermore, the console provides high definition 3-D vision superior to any current laparoscopic systems.
Providing surgery by this technique allows for removal of a uterus through very small, dime sized incisions. This allows for significantly less pain, less blood loss, less scarring, shorter recovery time, a faster return to normal daily activities and in many cases, better clinical outcomes.
The daVinci system, recently purchased by Providence Memorial Hospital, is the first robotic surgical system in the area. Prior to its arrival, El Paso was one of only two cities in the U.S. with a population of over 500,000, without a robot. It will be utilized by surgeons in the area of urology, general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery as well as gynecology.
